What is a Chiropractor?

A Chiropractor (doctor of Chiropractic), is a licensed, primary health-care practitioner, who is an expert in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the structure and function of the spine, nervous system and joints.

Chiropractors have the responsibility to form a diagnosis and are concerned with the treatment of a disorder and in the prevention of its reoccurrence, primarily by “adjusting” the spine and joints. This is referred to as a Chiropractic Adjustment.

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained extensively in spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) and use non-invasive, natural treatments to help the body to heal and to maintain health, without the use of drugs or surgery.

Dr. Leslie Horowitz is a female Chiropractor in Toronto and graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1992.

What does a Chiropractor do?

There are a variety of techniques that Chiropractors use when treating patients, so it is important to ask about the techniques a Chiropractor uses before you make an appointment for care.

Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.

Dr. Horowitz uses both diversified techniques and a hand-held instrument called the Pulstarfras.

Diversified Chiropractic Technique actually refers to a number of different highly skilled maneuvers (aka Adjustments), that Chiropractors perform, in order to reduce pain and disability. Chiropractic Adjustments restore proper joint movements, alignment and function. As such, Chiropractors mainly use their hands when performing Diversified maneuvers.

Pulstarfras is a computerized device and software program that allows Dr. Horowitz to scan the full spine for areas of resistance, that suggest that a Chiropractic Adjustment is required. She uses this information to decide where spinal treatments are required. The Pulstarfras can also be used to mobilize the spinal joints in a gentle manner.

This is an especially important treatment tool in instances where regular Chiropractic Adjustments cannot be carried out, for example in a situation where there is bone loss (Osteoporosis), ligament laxity in the neck joints or medications that affect bone integrity and strength.

It is also a good option for anyone who wishes to strive for good spinal hygiene but does not like being adjusted manually or hearing the popping sound that can occur with Chiropractic Adjustments.
