Stressors Affecting the Spine and Nervous System:

While a certain amount of stress is normal and healthy, and stress causes us to grow physically, emotionally and spiritually, too much stress over prolonged periods of time can be harmful. What are the stressors affecting the spine and nervous system?

Examples of physical stressors include:

  • poor posture
  • congenital scoliosis
  • lack of exercise and stretching
  • car accidents and falls resulting in sprains, strains, fractures and other bodily damage
  • excessive sitting at school or at work
  • repetitive strain during work activities
  • significant leg length discrepancy
  • poor foot biomechanics (such as fallen arches, over-pronation, over- supination and other conditions from birth, due to trauma or acquired such as plantar fasciitis

Examples of chemical stressors include:

  • an unhealthy diet with excessive carbohydrates, fats, food additives, salt and the like
  • compulsive overeating or undereating
  • smoking
  • excessive pollution
  • exposure to harsh chemicals
  • over-reliance on medications with negative side effects

Examples of emotional stressors include:

  • unhealthy relationships and boundaries
  • excessive work
  • financial hardship
  • major life changes such as divorce, having a child, moving residences
  • unresolved childhood trauma
  • physical or emotional abuse
  • negative thinking patterns

Chiropractors examine the full spine and joints related to the pain, in order to detect areas of nervous, muscle and skeletal system dysfunctions that may exist due to the build-up of physical, emotional, and chemical stressors that overwhelm the body’s ability to heal itself.

Don’t allow stress to rob you of your quality of life! You can learn to be more mindful in keeping your stressors to a manageable level!
