Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for chronic back pain is being found to be effective in healing chronic lower back pain.

There is increasing evidence that Cognitive Behavioral Treatment is effective for Chronic Back Pain Relief.

Dr. Horowitz has experience using Cognitive Behavioral thought records and principles with patients in her practice and she took a continuing education course with CAMH on implementing Cognitive-Behavioural principles for treating physical pain. The reason Dr. Horowitz uses the term “activation” rather than “therapy” is because Chiropractors are not trained as mental health practitioners.

Dr. Horowitz’s goal in using Cognitive-Behavioral Activation with patients is to help empower people to change their perceptions of pain. By encouraging people to simultaneously re-consider their thoughts around injuries while they begin to carry out recommended activities, healing is accelerated. Often, people have been avoiding activities because they have developed maladaptive beliefs that the activity will cause damage and make their pain and disability worse.

Cognitive-Behavioural Activation for Lower Back Pain helps a patient to see how their maladaptive beliefs and behaviours play an important role in maintaining pain levels and exacerbate mood and anxiety problems.

While not required for all patients, during the initial consultation screening, Dr. Horowitz is able to determine which patients might benefit.

For example, a patient who experienced terrible pain in the acute stages following a car accident may have developed a catastrophic belief that any discomfort experienced during exercising is causing further damage and disability. The patient may be afraid of trying certain movements and therefore may not follow through with recommended exercises.
