Your Spine and Nervous System Need Care! Maximize their Function Throughout Your Life!
When you have pain that is not going away on its own or reoccurs, your pain may be coming from your spine, joints, nerves, discs or muscles. You may not be able to move normally. It is a good idea to search for relief and chiropractic care is one of the safest treatments available.
Chiropractic doctors are primary health professionals. This means they have the training and responsibility to diagnose and treat dysfunction and disorders that affect the spine, nervous system, and joints.
Chiropractors treat pain naturally, with non-invasive manual therapy.
Though it may seem that episodes of pain sometimes come unexpectedly, in most instances, there are prior stresses that lead to it.
Chiropractors help you to identify factors that caused your pain and help you to alleviate your discomfort.
Chiropractic care involves:
- reducing pain
- improving spinal and peripheral joint function
- healing nerve interference
- relaxing muscles
- helping you to prevent future injuries, episodes of pain and to potentially slow down arthritis from progressing
The Limited Capacity of the Spine to Heal Itself
Did You Know…
Your heart and central nervous system are unique compared to other tissues in your body (unlike the skin), in that they have limited ability to repair themselves.
Bones are living tissues, that respond to the forces placed on them.
Spinal Bone & Disc Repair:
When it comes to the bones of your spine, spinal discs and facet joints respond to excessive loads and injuries in an “unproductive manner.” Repair is inadequate, leaving the spine in a state of dysfunction and setting the stage for arthritis to set in.
When a disc becomes injured and a disc herniation occurs, the body is capable of absorbing some of the herniated material, but the underlying tear in the outer disc often persists. Remnants of a herniated disc extrusion can be a recurrent problem, and you may experience multiple episodes of disc herniation over time.
The Importance of Preventive Spinal Checkups:
Children and adults should be taught how to take care of their spines throughout their lives by learning proper posture, daily exercise, stretching, and setting up their work and study areas with proper ergonomics in mind.
By addressing issues early, chiropractors can help people to avoid long-term discomfort, improve their quality of life and potentially, to slow down degenerative changes in their spines and joints.
Chiropractic Diagnosis
After consulting with the doctor about your concerns, there are a variety of diagnostic procedures that are used to determine the root causes of your pain or dysfunction. She will then explain your diagnosis, prognosis and prepare a treatment plan for you to consider.
Diagnostic procedures may use include:
- Postural Analysis
- Leg length analysis for an anatomical short leg
- Range of Motion testing of your spine, Sacroiliac, and/or Peripheral Joints
- Neurological testing of your reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength
- Orthopedic testing to determine which motions reproduce your pain and which structures are being compromised
- Motion Palpation of your spine to detect areas of joint dysfunction
- PulStar® computerized analysis of your spine
- Foot Arch Analysis
- TOG GaitScan™ Computerized Foot Scan
- Brannock device foot measurements
- Envisic 3-D Casting of your feet to make custom orthotics
- Pressure Algometer readings of sore areas
- Hand and Thumb Dynamometer Grip and Pinch Strength Readings
- X-ray are taken when needed to clarify your diagnosis
Chiropractic Treatments offered
Your Chiropractic plan of care may include:
- Manual therapy of your spinal or peripheral joints (also known as spinal manipulation or mobilization) to restore lost segmental spinal motion, reduce pain, reduce muscle spasm, and increase overall motion
- PulStar® spinal therapeutic mechanical mobilizations
- Massage that is deep, directed to your muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments- to reduce muscle tension, trigger points, and improve circulation.
- Massage with a Vibratoner
- Stretching of your spine and limbs
- Progressive Neuromuscular Facilitation -to lengthen and relax muscles and correct muscle imbalances
- Strengthening maneuvers for your muscles
- Physical therapy modalities such as Ultrasound and Interferential Current therapy
- Ergonomic and postural advice
- Rehabilitation Exercises: showing exercises that are safe to do and exercises to avoid, so you feel more confident about the exercise and activities that you take on
- Custom orthotics or a heel lift to provide biomechanical correction if your feet are creating imbalances that are affecting your spine
- Education about preventing recurrences and future injuries-prevent unnecessary stress and loads on the spine.
Spinal manipulation involves moving the joints of your spine slightly beyond the usual physiological range of motion, using a fast, low amplitude thrust. As a result, an audible “pop” sound may be heard and felt, which often provides immediate relief. Joint motion is improved as is your range of motion.
Spinal Mobilization also moves the joints but in smaller, slower, and repetitive motions.
These procedures are only applied to bones that have lost their normal motion and function. to move better and to help prevent spinal degeneration.
The Goals of Chiropractic Care
- To reduce pain, dysfunction, and disability by re-establishing dysfunctional spinal and joint segments
- To teach you how to stretch and exercise safely to prevent re-injury
- To prevent spinal degeneration
- To restabilize degraded lumbar joints and increase disc annulus strength by teaching proper postures, lifting techniques, ergonomics, and spine-sparing movements
- How to avoid overloading spinal discs
- To keep the spine as healthy as possible
- To reduce the need for surgery and drugs by offering early-stage treatment for discogenic back pain and spinal stenosis.
